Árstiðir by Clamavi de Profundis, Sung by Kesshō, Crimsonfang, Crowfire, and Bluelotus
(Since this is taking place in the past, Mutetree and his group are going to go by the Japanese versions of their names. Here’s a quick guide
Musei- Mute
Shinku- Crimson
Suna- Sand
Karasu- Crow
Surijan- Stygian
Aoi- Blue)
It had been a few moons since the passing of Ren and Yuki. Surijan and Aoi were still getting over the loss, Shinku and Musei took them in along with Karasu. While the toms were still grieving, that didn’t stop other cats from bullying Aoi whether it be for his appearance or whatever reason they deemed fit. One tom had made the mistake of mocking Ren’s death... he never saw Aoi coming. The tom was alright, but his ego was shot given Aoi’s size and appearance. Musei had to speak with both boys and Karasu about in clan fighting.
“He made fun of Okaasan and Otousan! He was mocking their death! This one had to defend them, Sensei!” Aoi yelled back. The tom rarely raised his voice, he was as quiet as Musei more often than not. He also knew that Aoi wasn’t much of a liar. A lecture still had to be passed on Aoi by the Rīdā, but he would not be alone.
“Why is this one in trouble, Shinku-Chan? What did this one do wrong?” He asked the red shecat as they walked towards Shinku’s mother, Kesshō.
“We cannot fight ourselves, Aoi. Not without issuing a challenge to the other first.” She explained. While she didn’t agree with what happened, she understood what needed to be done, she probably wouldn’t have given the tom a chance either.
“That is stupid. He was insulting Ren-San and Yuki-San, he had it coming.” Karasu deadpanned.
“Even so, it is a coward’s move.” Shinku replied. The two younger cats nodded before approaching the elder shecat. The trio bowed to the elder before rising.
“Okaasan.” Shinku greeted.
“Obaasan.” Karasu spoke.
“Kesshō-Sensei.” Aoi’s voice was quiet as he greeted the elder.
The old shecat smiled back.
“Ah, Shinku, my dear girl. How are you doing, dear?”
“I am well Okaasan.”
“And how are my Mago?” She asked. It still felt weird to Aoi for Shinku-Sensei’s Okaasan to call him her Mago. His and Sarijan’s Obaasans and Ojiisans passed a few moons before they lost their parents, but that didn’t mean he wanted to replace them.
“I am well, Obaasan.” Karasu replied.
“I am okay, Kesshō-Sensei.” Aoi answered.
“That is wonderful to hear.” The old shecat answered. “Have you been practicing your songs?”
“Yes they have. Karasu and Aoi have beautiful voices.” Shinku praised. The two young cats each licked the hair on their fur, slightly embarrassed.
“Could I hear your voices?” Kesshō inquired.
“Could we hear you sing too, Obaasan?” Karasu asked. The shecat thought for a moment before nodding.
“I know the perfect song for us to sing. You know the song Árstiðir right?”
“That’s one of the songs that HoltasoleyClan taught us, right?” Karasu asked.
“Yes they did. I think it is a beautiful song. Would you like to sing that?” The two young cats nodded their heads. “Excellent.” Kesshō smiled.
Aoi stepped closer before sitting diagonal from Karasu and Shinku, “Rising with the waking sun. As the morning calls my name. I feel it invite me, to be free from care and pain. For the future days of winter chill. Are to far away to harm me. The springtime and the morning. Bring me warmth and laughter dawning.” The words themselves felt laughable to him, they were words of someone who hadn’t lost their parents, but he would admit that the song gave him some comfort. Okaasan loved this song. She loved listening to him and his brother sing it, when Sarijan still had a feminine sounding voice.
He joined the others, “Through the year, Árstiðir. Calling me, changing me.”
“Now I'm small, growing tall.” Aoi sung on his own.
“Through the year, Árstiðir.”
Karasu was the next to step forward and stood a tail length away from Aoi’s left, “Walking with the burning sun. As the morning calls my name. I feel it invite me. To accept a share of pain. And to work to shape my destiny. That my future days be happy. The summer and the daylight
Bring me struggle, love and delight.” Sometimes songs or some lyrics to said song speak to a cat, this was one of those times. She couldn’t quite describe it. Perhaps it was the pain of losing a loved one that she shared with her now brothers. She looked over to Aoi who took in a breath along with the others.
“Through the year, Árstiðir. Calling me, changing me.”
“Burning bright, like a light.”
“Through the year, Árstiðir.”
Shinku was the next to step forward, sitting beside Karasu, ”Lasting through the waning sun. As it calls again my name. I feel it invite me. To stay strong despite the pain. And to persevere along the road, though turning back would tempt me. The autum and the evening, make me hidden in my grieving.” The loss of Ren and Yuki hit Shinku hard. She’d been friends with Ren since they were kits and had been through so much together, she honestly thought they would all be elders together. The loss of Ren would always pain her, but she needed to be strong though, she had to be strong for Ren’s children. She looked over to Aoi. He reminded her so much of her friend. She would be strong, and she would make them strong.
“Through the year, Árstiðir. Calling me, changing me.”
“Do not fear, persevere.” Aoi looked over to Shinku as she sang this. She was looking at him and Karasu. I’ll be strong. For Ren’s sake, I will make you strong.
“Through the year, Árstiðir.”
Kesshō rose to her paws, shakily. She walked forward so that she was close to the tom and shecats she called family, “Resting in the setting sun, as it gently speaks my name. I feel it invite me, to forget my age and pain. To remember days from long ago. That made my live worth living. In the winter and the sunset
I forget the chill of regret.” While Kesshō wasn’t at Awaishi’s door yet, she knew she was no longer young. She was proud of the cats her kids had become, she was saddened by the losses of her friends. Very few were with her now. It was all apart of life though. Seikatsu breathed life into you and Awaishi took your last. It filled her with joy knowing she’d done all she could to raise Shinku and Suna into honorable warriors, and she wondered if Gin looked down at his family with pride as well.
“Through the year, Árstiðir. Calling me, changing me.”
“In the deep, now I sleep.”
“Through the year, Árstiðir.” There was a pause of reflection on each of their parts before continuing, “Through the year, Árstiðir. Calling me, changing me. Season four, evermore. Through the year, Árstiðir.” There was a moment of silence as they let the words dance in the space between them for a bit.
Kesshō smiled, “Beautiful voices indeed, Shinku. Thank you for making an old shecat smile.” She lightly nuzzled her head against the trio before lying back down. “Would you like to visit for a bit, Shinku or were you just checking on me?”
“We can visit, Okaasan.” Shinku assured with a smile.
Crimsonfang awoke with a smile at the memory. While she missed her mother dearly. A small part of her was glad her mother passed before Aoi had become an apprentice. She knew what Kesshō would have done to Bismuth if she was still alive and what happened to her Aoi.
“What’s got you in a good mood, Shinku?” Mutetree inquired with a smile.
The shecat nuzzled her friend, “I was having a dream about when Karasu, Aoi, and I went to visit my mother.”
“That is good to hear. She loved the three of them so much.” He smiled at the memory of the now deceased shecat.
“Indeed she did.” Crimsonfang thanked the gods for letting her mother visit her in her dreams.
